The literal translation from Latin of the word data is “that is given”. In ICT, data means “computer data”.

Data and Ownership

By law, it is not possible to have ownership rights to data. Property rights can rest only on human objects that are susceptible to human control. Data is not a material object and therefore does not fall within the scope of this definition.

Intellectual Property Rights

It is possible to have intellectual property rights on data. Data may be subject to copyrights or database rights, provided the protection requirements are met.
