Electronic Communication Service

Electronic communication service is a term used in the ePrivacy Regulation. The term is defined in the European Electronic Communications Code. It concerns internet access services and services that consist essentially or entirely of the transmission of signals. Personal communication services are therefore also included. These are services that enable an interactive exchange of information between a number of people. Well-known examples are Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, etc.

Communication between machines – as is the case with The Internet of Things – also falls within the scope of electronic communication services. The EPV, therefore, applies to the Internet of Things. In addition, WiFi hotspots, for example, fall under its scope.
