Image Quote

Under the right to quote, a relevant part of someone else’s work may be reproduced, provided certain conditions are met. This applies not only to quoting from texts but also to quoting from images.

Additional Condition: Functional Connection

The quoted fragment of the image must have a functional connection with the article. A fragment only to decorate an article is not allowed. A functional link can be used, for example, when a film is announced in an article and a screenshot from the film is placed with this article.

Size of the Image Quote

In one lawsuit, showing images of 194×145 pixels (thumbnails) of houses in a house search engine was deemed as legally allowed as a quote. However, this does not mean that this is the general upper limit of formats that are allowed. In principle, the size of an allowed fragment is not limited to an upper limit.
