A petition is a written request to a court with which a petition procedure is initiated.

Difference from subpoena

The petition must be distinguished from the subpoena. In the Netherlands, any civil proceedings are initiated with a subpoena, unless the law shows that a petition is required. If the word “requests” is used in law, the procedure must be initiated by a petition.

Examples

Examples of procedures to be initiated through a petition are bankruptcy filing, requesting leave for attachment, and divorce proceedings.
