A writ is an official report of the bailiff in which he or she reports on the official handing over of a judicial document. Actions that are recorded in a writ are for example a seizure or serving a summons.
Significance
A writ serves as proof that the judicial document has actually been received by the person concerned. The bailiff will always try to signify the writ in person. If that is not possible, he may hand over the judicial document to a housemate or someone else who is likely to ensure that the document reaches the person for whom it is intended on time. If this also fails, the bailiff will leave the document in a closed envelope at the relevant address.
